Manufacturing Meaning is a collection of essays critical of Taiwanese realist photography. A critic who has for years devoted his attention on photography culture and well-known for his acute perspectives, Li-Hsin Kuo uses the works of Taiwanese photographers, photo collections and social phenomena as a starting point in this book. In five essays, he provides a profound analysis of the practices and changes to “documentary and journalistic photography” in the Taiwanese context, before and after the lifting of the martial law in the 1980s.
