Sojanggak is a publishing house and design studio whose name means “House of Small Books.” We discover content that resonates with three key ideas—“the periphery,” “originality,” and “beautiful form”—and bring it into book form. By “periphery,” we mean a way of looking at the people around us, not a line that marks a border. From conversations with nearby neighbors and friends, we uncover original stories that sparkle and craft them into beautiful forms that help them shine—that is Sojanggak’s work. With a special focus on Southeast Asian visual culture, design, and ecology, we connect with readers in Korea and abroad. As a “vessel for content,” Sojanggak carefully considers the form each work calls for and produces books with craft and care.
Book Workshop is a cultural space that collects the tools and instruments used in bookmaking before the digital age, created through analogy. These tools, instruments, and handmade books, imbued with the materiality of books, are transformed into exhibition and course content. In order to record and preserve bookmaking culture, Book Workshop also engages in publishing—a "one book a year" publishing project. These previously commonplace, but increasingly rare, discarded items are the stories Book Workshop wants to tell.
