As soon as Chairman Mao called out “The intellectual youth must go to the country, and will be educated from living in rural poverty,” the young revolutionary Huang Shuang-lin, who was full of enthusiasm and supposed to stay at school, bid farewell to his family, his first love and the city, with his simple political visions along with passion and hope, to join the twenty million fellow youth in the mighty revolution "up to the mountains and down to the countryside.” However, the reality after arriving in the village – food deprivation, toiling labor, endless struggle sessions and secretive love – threatens to wear out the educated young man’s passion and longing, to devastate his flesh and soul, little by little….
